NDT JOB MARKET IS RED HOT

Ironically, more opportunity exists for NDT professionals today than ever before. In fact, the NDT job market can only be classified as “red hot.” Reflecting the nation’s overall tight labor market, there are thousands of job openings available in NDT. It is estimated that between 6,000 and 7,000 NDT jobs opened up last year, nearly a 30% increase over the previous year.

There are many reasons for this increase in NDT hiring. A major factor is the overall health of the economy. With key sectors such as manufacturing, transportation and public works humming along, there are more inspections and tests needed. A more important factor for the long-term health of the NDT industry is an increasing realization of the need for non-destructive testing in broader applications. Savvy business leaders are beginning to understand that an ounce of prevention — in the form of more comprehensive testing — is better than an expensive pound of cure, and will lead to a better bottom line.

All this activity has a corollary: an increase in wages for NDT specialists. The tightening labor market and increased competition for the best people have created upward pressure on wages, with salaries rising an average of 10% over the previous year. While money should never be the only criteria for changing jobs, it’s important to know what the current market rate is for a certain position or in a specific region.

X-Ray Radiography Testing

High-Energy Radiographic NDT Inspection

High-energy radiographic NDT inspection capabilities include penetration of up to 11″ of cast steel or its equivalent with a material weight of up to 10 tons.  Two percent sensitivity can be demonstrated on material thickness down to .75”.

Our Varian Linear Accelerators can image six inches of cast steel on medium grain film in five minutes, whereas a 100 curie Cobalt 60 source exposure would be 10 times greater on the same application.

Two millimeter focal spot sizes allow for greater definition at shorter source-to-film distances, while a higher radiation intensity permits longer source-to-film distances to cover up to six 14” x 17” films in a single exposure.

Magnetic Particle Testing Training

Level 2

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course provides the student with 24 hours of training in the Magnetic Particle Testing method designed around pressure vessels pipe industry requirements. The student will learn the basics of the Magnetic Particle method and have a working knowledge of its application and limitations. The laboratory portion of the course will train the student to set up and properly maintain magnetic particle systems, and enable them to develop and apply techniques in accordance with customer/industry specifications and standards.

Magnetic Particle Inspection Service

An extremely sensitive non destructive testing method for use on ferrous materials, magnetic particle inspection can detect minute cracks open to the surface, and some subsurface discontinuities. The productivity and sensitivity of this method make magnetic particle testing an industry inspection standard requirement.

How does this type of NDT inspection work?

Magnetic particle testing for NDT is one of the more economical and speedy ways to ensure ferrous materials are safe and ready for use in the field. In simplified terms, this type of non destructive inspection is performed by creating a magnetic field around the material being tested and then applying a carrier fluid which holds particles typically made up of iron oxide. Any defect in the surface or just under the surface of the subject material will distort the magnetic field surrounding it, causing the particles in the carrier fluid to be draw to it. This attraction is easily detected and identified. If there are no flaws in the material, the particles within the magnetic field will remain evenly distributed throughout

X-R-I Testing capabilities cover almost all of the potential applications of magnetic particle NDT inspection. Conventional methods of direct magnetization, or induced magnetization are utilized with portable or fixed inspection systems. Multidirectional systems typically are employed for large volume NDT projects.
